The Math
Why Carriers Charge by Size, Not Just Weight
If you ship a large box full of pillows, it might only weigh 3 pounds. However, it takes up a massive amount of space inside a FedEx delivery truck. Because space is limited, shipping carriers charge you based on the Dimensional Weight (DIM) if the box is large but light.
The DIM Weight Formula
Formula: (Length × Width × Height) / DIM Divisor
The DIM Divisor varies by carrier. As of recently:
- UPS (Retail) & FedEx (Retail): Divisor is 139.
- USPS (Priority Mail): Divisor is 166.
Actual Weight vs Billable Weight
Carriers will calculate the DIM weight and compare it to the Actual Weight on the scale. They will always charge you for whichever number is higher. This is called the "Billable Weight". If you are an e-commerce seller, using the smallest box possible is the easiest way to instantly increase your profit margins.
