Decoding Your Paycheck

Understanding Table T, Points, and how to maximize your earnings in LAUSD.

1

Salary Points vs. Columns

LAUSD determines your pay “Column” based on Salary Points. You earn 1 point for every university unit or district PD completed. Use this table to check your standing:

PointsPay Column
0 – 13Column 1
14 – 27Column 2
28 – 41Column 3
42 – 55Column 4
56 – 69Column 5
70 – 97Column 6 (Max)
2

The 15% NBC Raise

The National Board Certification (NBC) is the single biggest salary booster. It adds a 15% differential to your base pay (7.5% for the cert + 7.5% for working at a High Priority School).

Example: A teacher making $90k base pay jumps to $103,500 instantly upon certification.

3

Degree Differentials

Unlike steps which increase automatically each year, differentials are fixed amounts added to your annual gross:

  • Master’s Degree: +$584 / year
  • Doctorate: +$1,168 / year
  • Bilingual (BCLAD): Ranges from $600 – $3,000 depending on assignment.

Everything you need to know about Table T, Raises, and Deductions.

The 2024-2026 UTLA Salary Agreement

The salary figures in our calculator reflect the historic agreement between UTLA and LAUSD. This contract secured significant raises to combat inflation and retain talent.

  • Base Increases: The agreement included a 21% wage increase over the contract term.
  • Table T: This is the standard “Preparation Salary Table” for credentialed classroom teachers. If you are a counselor, nurse, or psychologist, you might be on Table C or Table E, which have slightly different scales.
Projected 2025-26: Our tool uses the latest available data projected for the 2025-26 school year, anticipating the full implementation of the scheduled raises.
How to Read “Table T” (Steps vs. Columns)

The LAUSD salary matrix (Table T) is a grid defined by two factors:

  1. Steps (Vertical): These represent your years of service. You generally move down one step for every year you teach. However, steps are not infinite; they often cap at Step 10 or 12, after which you only get “Career Increments” (longevity bumps) at year 15, 20, etc.
  2. Columns (Horizontal): These represent your education level. You move right across the table by earning “Salary Points.” Moving from Column 1 to Column 2 is worth roughly $2,000-$3,000 per year.

Pro Tip: You want to be in the bottom-right corner of the table (High Step, High Column) to maximize earnings.

Gross vs. Net: Why is my check smaller?

The calculator above shows your Gross Annual Pay. However, your actual take-home pay (Net Pay) will be significantly lower due to mandatory deductions. Expect your paycheck to be 25-35% lower than the gross amount due to:

  • CalSTRS (Pension): Approximately 10.2% of your paycheck goes directly to your retirement fund.
  • UTLA Dues: Union membership dues.
  • Federal & State Taxes: Standard income tax withholdings.
  • Health Benefits: While LAUSD covers premiums, dependents or upgrades may cost extra.
How to Earn Salary Points Fast

If you are stuck in Column 1 or 2, you are leaving money on the table. You need 98 salary points to reach the maximum column. Here is how to get them:

  • University Units: 1 Semester Unit = 1 Salary Point. (Quarter units = 0.67 points).
  • District PD: LAUSD offers professional development classes (Salary Point Classes) specifically for this purpose.
  • Multicultural Requirement: To advance past a certain point, you must complete specific coursework in multicultural education.
