The "Shopify Screenshot" Illusion
You've seen the gurus on YouTube flexing their Shopify dashboards showing $100,000 in daily revenue. What they don't show you is the Profit and Loss (P&L) statement.
In dropshipping and direct-to-consumer (DTC) eCommerce, it is entirely possible to do $100,000 in sales and lose money. Revenue is vanity, profit is sanity.
The 4 Hidden Costs Eating Your Margin
- 1. Cost of Goods Sold (COGS): The amount you pay your manufacturer in China, plus the ocean freight or air shipping to get it to the customer.
- 2. Customer Acquisition Cost (CPA): How much you paid Facebook, TikTok, or Google to generate that single sale. If your product is $50 and your CPA is $30, you're almost guaranteed to be in the red.
- 3. Shopify Payments Fees: Shopify takes a percentage of every transaction (usually 2.9% + 30 cents). This doesn't sound like much, but it comes out of your gross revenue, meaning it takes a disproportionately massive bite out of your net profit.
- 4. Refunds and Chargebacks: (Not included in this basic calculator, but crucial!) If your product is low quality, a 5% refund rate will destroy whatever tiny margin you had left.
What is a "Good" Margin?
In the physical product space, achieving a 15% to 25% Net Profit Margin after all expenses and ad spend is considered excellent. If your margin is below 10%, you are one bad Facebook ad day away from losing money.
