The State of E-commerce Return Fraud

According to the National Retail Federation, for every $100 in returned merchandise accepted, retailers lose $10.60 to return fraud. This means over 10% of all returns are fraudulent. For independent Shopify and WooCommerce store owners, this margin erosion can be the difference between a profitable month and going out of business.

Common Types of Return Fraud

• Wardrobing (Free Renting): This is massively popular in the apparel industry. A customer buys an expensive dress, wears it to a party, leaves the tags tucked in, and returns it the next day claiming it "didn't fit."
• Empty Box Scam: The customer requests a return label, gets an instant refund, and mails back an empty box or a box filled with rocks so the shipping weight matches.
• Stolen Item Returns: Organized retail crime rings steal merchandise and attempt to return it for a cash or gift card refund.
• The "Item Not Received" (INR) Claim: The customer receives the package, but claims it was stolen off their porch, forcing you to send a replacement or issue a refund.

The Double Hit of Return Fraud

Return fraud doesn't just cost you the retail value of the lost item. You also lose the outbound shipping cost, the return shipping label cost, the packaging materials, and the customer acquisition cost (CAC) spent on Facebook Ads to acquire that scammer in the first place.

How to Protect Your Store

If your fraud cost is spiraling out of control, you need to implement friction. Use apps like Loop Returns or Returnly, but configure them to require photos of the item before a return label is issued. Stop offering instant refunds upon carrier scan, and explicitly state that refunds are only issued after warehouse inspection.
