How to Calculate Stripe Fees

As a business owner, freelancer, or e-commerce seller, processing fees can eat into your profit margins if you aren't careful. Stripe is one of the most popular payment gateways in the world, but calculating their exact fees manually can be confusing, especially when international cards are involved.

Standard Stripe Pricing (USA)

For businesses based in the United States, Stripe charges a standard rate of 2.9% + 30¢ for every successful card charge. This applies to most major credit and debit cards including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover.

Hidden Costs: International Cards

Many businesses get surprised when they receive an international payment. If a customer uses a card issued outside of the United States, Stripe adds an additional 1.5% fee to the transaction. If currency conversion is required, another 1% may be added (this calculator currently models the 1.5% international card fee).

How to Avoid Paying Stripe Fees

While you cannot bypass Stripe's fees entirely if you use their platform, there are strategies to minimize their impact:

• ACH Transfers: If you are a B2B company sending large invoices, ask your clients to pay via ACH direct debit. Stripe's ACH fee is capped at $5, which is massively cheaper than 2.9% on a $10,000 invoice.
• Pass Fees to Customers: Some businesses include a small "convenience fee" at checkout to cover the processing cost.
• Volume Discounts: If your business processes a high volume of transactions, you can contact Stripe sales to negotiate custom rates.
