What makes a YouTube Channel "Dead"?

A "dead channel" on YouTube doesn't mean you have zero subscribers. In fact, most dead channels have thousands of subscribers. A channel is considered dead when the YouTube algorithm stops impressions for new videos because the channel's core audience (subscribers) ignores the content.

When you publish a new video, YouTube first shows it to a small seed audience of your own subscribers. If they don't click (low CTR) or they click and immediately leave (low retention), YouTube assumes the video is bad and stops pushing it to a broader audience.

The 3 Core Metrics of Channel Health

• View-to-Subscriber Ratio: If you have 100,000 subscribers and only get 1,000 views per video, your ratio is 1%. This tells the algorithm that 99% of people who know you don't care about your new content. A healthy ratio is 10% or higher.
• Click-Through Rate (CTR): The percentage of people who see your thumbnail and click. A CTR below 3% usually indicates a severe problem with packaging (Titles and Thumbnails).
• Audience Retention (AVD): The percentage of the video people actually watch. If you make a 10-minute video and people leave after 2 minutes, your retention is 20%. The algorithm favors channels that keep viewers on the platform longer.

Should You Start a New Channel?
